Entry 7: Art vs Design

After last week's research on Designs that draw inspirations from artists, i kept this idea in mind and i began to unconsciously analyse each logo or piece of design i see around me. To my surprise, i was able to pick out a lot of logos and designs that resemble art movements and styles, as this is not something i was aware of before.

As i am more comfortable working as an artist, i recognize a lot of the art styles/periods that the logos i found are inspired by. For this entry, I want to show some examples of common designs i found and the art style/movement that they were inspired by, as i am surprised just how much designers are effected by artists.

The two logos on the left make me think of light painting art works. The first light painting was achieved by Picasso and photographer Gjon Mili in 1949. Light painting has always interested me as it is also a form of performance art. While it can be documented in video or photographic format to be presented the work itself can never be recreated exactly the same again.
The linear lines of the visual parts of the logos resemble the free handed style of light paintings, which can be achieved easily nowadays by using programmes such as photoshop or illustrator.

Art Nouveau is my favourite art movement, everything is beautifully illustrated and romantically styled. The style is very floaty like and feminine. The artwork on the right is by my favourite artist of the period: Alphronse Mucha, who was famous for being an art nouveau artist. The text of the art nouveau style always mirrored the illustration, as most of the letter are hand illustrated as well. Therefore texts of this particular style are also highly decorative, which curves, swirls and bends to compliment the image; very much like the logos on the left i found. Art Nouveau was all about being decorative and extravagantly elegant, personally i am a very visual person, which is why i love the beautiful aesthetics of this style. The logos used hand drawn texts and decorative pattern that surrounds the letters which clearly shows similarity to the characteristics of the Art Nouveau style.

This week's review has been interesting and exciting for me as an art student. I am now aware how much design need art, this inspires me to try to improve in my design skills even more. I do want to devote my next entry on finding artists and artworks that are inspired by designs, as i feel it would be a lot less common. It would be interesting to try and see what i can come across.
