Entry 8: Art vs Design

Last week i analysed some logo designs that are inspired by Artists/art movements. I was surprised to see just how common it is for designers to incorporate art into their works, which shows the close link between art and design.
As i discovered how much design need art, i was curious if it work the other way too. Artist strife to be original and different; therefore working from designs is not usually how artist want to make their statements. Thus i want to look for artist/artworks that make design their inspiration for this entry.

At first i was not expecting to find any references for this entry as i imagined it would be hard. Personally i consider myself as more of an artist, and i know that when i make works i want to be as unique as possible to have my own 'tailored' way of expressing my idea.

The first artist i looked at was Paul Davies who does paintings inspired by spacial and architectual designs. Artists can be inspired by forms and shapes of any objects, therefore buildings and interior designs can interest artists. Additionally it can also be for documentation purposes, especially before the days that cameras were invented. therefore architectual designs are some of the common subjects for artists to paint.

Personally i really admire the color treatment of Davies's paintings, he use very flat and bright colors at the same time was able to indicate the quality of the subject he's painting. (such as the clear liquid quality of the pool water)

Another artist that work with spacial and architectural design elements is Carla Klein.

Klein is one of my favourite painters, as she does amazing photo realism paintings that explores spaces, as well as the idea what an always crowded location can look/feel like if there's no people. Her works are constructed by perfectly painted lines and angles that deals with the architectual design elements. I also love her choice of colors and layering techniques, her paintings appear very watery and fluid. As she use very cold and her pallette is very limited to cool tones and monotones, I always get a very haunting feeliing from her paintings, and her paintings look as if they are underwater.

The last artist i looked at was Maria Pergay who is a 'Design aritst', as her works are not only functional furnitures, but also a sculptual like piece of art.
This is very interesting and furniture design was something i never really looked into untill now. And i am amazed at just how close art and design work together when it comes to furniture/architechtual designs; because such designs requires to be aesthetically interesting at the same time functional and safe to be used. 3 dimentional/sculptual based art is not something i am very familiar with, as i am more used to dealing with flat surfaces. However i come to realise that because of the need for unique style as well as functionality, it is much more common to have Art and design blending together to create interior/exterior deco and space designs.

I started this week's research thinking it would be hard to find artworks that are inspired by design, however as i progress through the references i looked at i found a new element of art and design. Through this week's findings, i have discovered one subject i have left out before, which is 3 dimentional based art and design. I have learnt that different to works that are flat, 3D works are much more flexible to work with in terms of art and design as they need to not only
look artistic they also need to be practically designed as well. This make me want to take part in an assignment that would give me a chance to deal with 3D works, as i know i have made myself too reliant on flat art, i am inspired to try working with something different.
